Dead Fish for Christmas

Dead Fish - Fishy Christmas Presents 2009

On 15 December 2009, my wife, Nicole, mailed a box of gifts to my parents from Newburgh, New York to Fairhope, Alabama. The box was an official white box bought from the Post Office.

We visited Fairhope arriving late on 21 December. The box didn’t arrive by Christmas Eve and the tracking receipt was left in New York, so we couldn’t officially inquire into the tracking of the box.

Fast forward to January 4th, 2010: I went to the Post Office upon returning to New York only to find out the box was tracked to Jersey City, New Jersey on the 16th of December, and that was the end of the tracking.

Well, the box arrived in Alabama on 4 January 2010 with a little extra surprise.

DEAD FISH!

Needless to say, we didn’t send fish, dead or alive.

The original white box must have been obliterated. My Dad opened a brown box with the address portion of the white box cut and taped onto the brown box. The box smelled awful. He opened the brown box to find some plastic with foil wrapped inside it. DEAD, SMELLY FISH.

Under the smelly fish were several presents wrapped in the original paper. Not all presents were present, of course, but were thrown in under the fish. The original white box was folded up nicely at the bottom of the brown box.

We insured the box for $150. Of course, we have to provide proof of value to the post office of the missing and damaged items. Some items did arrive intact and somehow didn’t have a “fishy” smell.

The postmaster in Fairhope said he has seen boxes obliterated, re-assembled and delivered, but NEVER with the addition of DEAD FISH. The other fishy part, the box was never tracked out of Jersey City; into and out of Mobile, Alabama; and then into Fairhope, Alabama.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Chris
