Timing is everything.
If you, The leader are not on time how can you possibly expect your section to be on time.
"To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late,"
Imagine the pride on your directors face when the first section there is always the clarinet section. You will have more time to tune to warm up and talk to your section.
It is very important to have time to simply talk with your section, because if they don't know you its harder for them to know your expectations.
I personally show up as early as I possibly can to everything, because then you are able to observe your section, you can see who arrives early, on time, or late.
Try making it a game, I found that some people tried competing with me, they would try getting there earlier than me and they were able to be the first ones to get tuned.
It is also a good idea to have a time keeper. I was the time keeper of my section because I was always there before anyone else. I would mark who was late or I would just yell out times during practices.
I did such a good job that during concert season my directors would ask me to watch the time.
Timing is everything, without it your band can fall apart.
