Double lip
by: Anonymous

Better ease of legato with double lip
warmer sound with double lip
Absolute baloney!
I am a professional clarinetist in New York and I have never, ever heard anyone sound "better" with double lip. We are all different, so the bottom line here us whatever works best for an individual player, stick with it! Kal was a great teacher- double lip. Russianoff was a great teacher- single lip.

double lip embouchre
by: Woodchuck

I originally learned to play single lip on the clarinet in grade school but now am old and have no front teeth so I have been trying to learn to double embouchure. Any thoughts on whether of not it is feasible?

Learning double-lip clarinet.
by: Joe Ray

All my favorite clarinetists used double-lip embouchure and Albert-system clarinets. Why would you (a clarinet teacher) not want to teach the best techniques to your students? Learning the double-lip is too much work, what!!!

FROM CLARINET-NOW.COM

Hey Joe,

Good catch! It does sound weird that I'd refrain from teaching a technique or sound that I use myself. It more comes from the integrity of the student. It takes an enormous amount of guts for a student to disregard an embouchure they've performed all of their life and go almost down to beginner level to learn the double-lip embouchure.

For students in middle and high school ages, unfortunately, most of the teaching is from one contest to the next. So, I'll correct the issues with single-lip embouchure as well as the fundamentals of everything else - articulation, sound, hand-position, posture, rhythms, dynamics, phrasing, etc. I have yet to have a student so dedicated to the clarinet that I can properly teach the double-lip technique to.

Best, Chris

Single or Double Lip
by: Anonymous

I have been playing the Eb Clarinet the past 23 years and the Bb Clarinet for the past 5 years. For the last year I have switched to single lip and in the beginning I found it a bit hard. The single lip embouchure gives you helps you in the agility when dealing with fast passages. Would like to have your comments. (tonnak@gmail.com)

Thanks!
by: Kelsey Bosley

I have always been confused about this since I started playing almost 8 years ago. All my books showed single but I never paid attention to it because I was young. I always do double but I may try to correct myself now and try single and bettering my double. Thanks!
